The most sculptural interior in Cape Town: a 1920s grain silo carved into a cathedral of curved concrete. Forty-two cylinders opened into an atrium, spiral stairs turning inside old bins, and a façade of pillowed glass. Nothing else on the continent photographs like it.

Zeitz MOCAA is the museum of contemporary African art in the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District — a 57-metre grain silo, built 1921–24 and converted by Heatherwick Studio, opened in 2017. The supplied frames cover the carved atrium, stairs and detail. Access via Groundglass; enquiries through EXT.

What the frames give you

Geometry you cannot build on a stage: cylinders sliced into ogive arches, board-marked concrete metres thick, and stairs that corkscrew inside intact bins toward round skylights. The atrium frames read from above and below; the detail frames — the pillowed glazing, the carved edges — hold up at full frame.

The register

Everything is hard surface and diffuse top-light. The concrete takes a cool, even grade with warm accents where artificial light lands. It plays as museum, monument or science-fiction interior depending on the lens.
