Casa Labia is the former residence of Prince Natale Labia, Italy’s first envoy to South Africa, built by Italian artisans on Muizenberg’s Main Road and now a restaurant, conference centre and music venue. What the frames give you

Full period staterooms — a gilded music room under a coffered ceiling, a blue dining room with portraits and silk, an entrance loggia framed by columns with nothing but ocean beyond. The exterior frames give the villa against the mountain and a garden path with palms running to the sea wall.

It reads as Europe — Venice, the Riviera, Edwardian Cape Town — while sitting twenty-odd metres from a beach break. Interiors are dense and warm; the loggia and garden give the same story daylight and salt air.
